Probably the first time I came to the Mitsuwa Marketplace was over ten years ago. As soon as my son was able to sit in one of those light weight stroller, I started bringing him out for lunches at different eateries. As a Stay-at-Home mom, I needed to get out of the house in order to achieve some type of balance and sanity.

The Mitsuwa Food Court provided a good respite since it is casual and offer a variety of choices, and the food are all good and reasonably priced. I was able to relax and eat while my son slept soundly in his little stroller, or if he was awake, I would feed him something.

As he grew older, he really enjoys Japanese food, especially the udons, and ramen. To this day, I believe that Mitsuwa is his favorite food destination. When the place is not crowded, the atmosphere gives a sense of calmness and peacefulness that we both find comforting. And one of our favorite thing to do after the meal is to venture into the supermarket section and look for my son’s favorite Japanese peach candy, and for myself, canned coffee with no sugar.

From the beginning, I have been thoroughly enjoying these lunches with my son. These meal sessions not only provided delicious food tasting adventures, but most importantly, wonderful bonding opportunities for my son and I. We would talk about school, friends, and even life in general at these outings, something that we don’t really do at home, since we are always occupied with chores, computer games, emails, etc.

DSCN0838

The restaurants inside this modest location are probably some of the best of their classes. Santouka is well know for its distinguished ramen, which my son already decided is the best in Los Angeles. Katsuhana, which specializes in deep fried pork, chicken cutlet as well as fried shrimp, is truly superb. While I tried not to eat a lot of fried food, the Pork Katsu is hard to resist –  moist, tender, and flavorful inside with a light and crunchy batter outside. The Katsu meal is a feast that comes with rice, soup, cabbage salad, fruit salad, small side dishes of tofu, and pickled vegetables.

DSCN0847

DSCN0853

One of the newer comer to the marketplace is J Sweets , which offers the prettiest, most enticing Mochi Cream –  a mochi ball filled with different delectable flavors.  My favorite is the Cafe au Latte, not too sweet, but with a definite strong taste of coffee. The Mochi Donuts look fantastic but have not tried yet. All the other cookies and sweets in the store are all so beautifully presented and packaged. However, the prices are high so I have not yet had the pleasure of tasting them.

DSCN0850

Miifune is the eatery that I have visited the most throughout these years. This place has a good selection of udons, sobas, and various combo plates. I particularly like the Wakame Soba or udon, the Beef Shabushabu, and the plain Curry Rice. The food is consistent and satisfying.

DSCN0849

I really enjoy the Mackerel plate at Miyabi-Tei. The oily, flavorful fish is grilled and comes with miso soup, a large bowl of rice and some shredded cabbage and little bits pickled radish. A bargain at about $7.00.

DSCN0837 - Copy - Copy

I don’t know why I like these ball shaped octopus snack made with wheat flour based batter, pickled ginger, and green onion, and cooked in a special takoyaki pan. Maybe it is the fact that they are so usual in taste and texture, sort of soft and chewy, salty and sweet, an odd kind of mouth feel and sensation.

DSCN0842

The Hamada-ya Cafe provides a more western style of food selections such as various spaghetti and pasta, risottos, and most delightfully, some of the tastiest cakes I have tried. One can order a set meal which comes with a salad, some bread, and tea or coffee. Almost right next door, is the Hamada-Ya Bakery, which I had already wrote about previously as one of the most outstanding bakery in town.

DSCN0841

The soup noodles here at Beni-Tora are quite substantial in size, as well as the gyozas, which are huge. I like the fact the noodles come with ample vegetables.

DSCN0835

Lupicia, a clean, modern looking store provides over 400  types of teas throughout the year, ranging from seasonal teas to flavored teas. The sales staff are extremely enthusiastic and more than eager to provide a tasting to the teas.

Chinese cuisine, Green Zone, Hainan, List of rice dishes, Restaurant, Rice, San Gabriel California, San Gabriel Valley

DSCN0797

First of all, it is already rather difficult to find a restaurant that serves organic dishes, but to find a Chinese restaurant that provides healthy, organic entrees, it is certainly a rarity.

Green Zone, a small yet very clean and comfortable place in the heart of San Gabriel Valley is a no doubt a needle in a haystack.

I must first clarify that not everything on the menu is organic, only those items specified organic are, and mainly that would be the vegetables, mushrooms, the buckwheat noodles, and the chicken.

I have heard about this restaurant for quite a while, and the reason I finally decided to go there today was so that I could get my son a take-out of the Organic Hainan Chicken Rice, since he does love the Hainan style Chicken Rice dish.

DSCN0793

DSCN0792

Though the interior is not big, I did not feel crammed at all, in fact, it felt rather airy and serene. The waiters were efficient and helpful. I decided on an order of the Steamed Chive Gyoza with organic chicken as the appetizer. The ten pieces arrived on a round bamboo platter. Famished from a small breakfast, I immediately stuffed the dumplings into my eager mouth. The taste was light, the texture smooth and moist, just perfect. I gobbled six of them in less than 30 seconds, while my eating companion was slowing savoring his measly four.

DSCN0795

DSCN0798

For the entree, I had the Vegetarian Sukiyaki, while my friend ordered the Beef Sukiyaki. The size of the two Sukiyaki pots were not too large, the ingredients inside tasted exceptionally fresh and delicious. All the vegetables were cooked perfectly, not too hard nor too soft, while retaining each of its own individual taste. I forgot to ask what they put into the wild rice, but it was the best rice I have ever had in a restaurant.

Even though I was not totally full, but I was extremely satisfied with the wonderful fresh ingredients and the unique tastes of all the dishes. I will certainly be back to try their curry dishes and the Satay Beef which looked so good from the table next to us.

DSCN0802

My son commented that the rice that came with the Organic Hainan Chicken Rice was exceedingly flavorful, different from all the other rice that he had before, and the chicken was quite terrific as well.

On one side of the restaurant, there are some organic produce, condiments and snacks that one can purchase, but the selection is limited. One would do better going to Whole Foods for more varieties of organic items.

Ten Ren – More Than Just Good Tea

DSCN0697

One of my best friend way back from elementary school came to Los Angeles a while ago with the husband and her daughter.

After stuffing ourselves to the maximum at El Rocoto, we headed over to Phoenix Dessert for some delectable Chinese dessert soups, fresh Durian Roll, and Strawberry Mochi. We were already really full by then, but we wanted to catch up some more, and her daughter wanted to try the Matcha Ice Cream Milk at this place called Ten Ren Tea Time.

So we decided to take a walk around the large strip mall in order to digest a bit so we could fit more food into our systems.

DSCN0688

There are a number of Ten Ren throughout the city. This particular one is one of the larger ones, with a good number of the patrons being students from the nearby college. Aside from a large selection of different teas, the menu offers a variety of savory dishes as well as sweet desserts and many choices of drinks.

This evening was all about drinks.

DSCN0695

I decided on the Hot Grass Jelly, which consisted of a rather large round container of mildly sweetened thick black grass jelly with some red beans and boba(tapioca balls) inside. Grass jelly is thought to have cooling properties, and is usually consumed in hot weather.

DSCN0691

My friend’s daughter had her Matcha Ice Cream Milk, which looked thick and foamy. She commented that it tasted pretty good, and not too sweet.  The Taro Milk Drink, a light purplish thick concoction that my friend decided on was rather delicious according to her. Her husband was absolutely stuffed, so he ordered the Pu-erh Hot Tea to aid him in digestion.

DSCN0689

We had a wonderful time enjoying each others’ companies, chatting about old times, about food, while leisurely savoring our flavorful drinks.

Snacks and Beyond – TJ

Business, Cheerios, Ice cream, Ice Cream Cones, Joe, Mochi, Oatmeal, Trader Joe

A friend and I, whenever we are in the mood for something good to snack on that are both delicious and not too junky, we would head over to our trusty spot – Trader Joe’s.

Aside from being a fun place to shop for foods, I like the fact that the store is not too big, which makes it easier and more efficient to find items that I would like to buy. Of course, another big reason for my friend and I to go is the “free coffee” and “free samples”.

In my opinion, the coffee, with a choice of fresh cream that is served there tastes much better than some of the famous coffee houses.

Let’s start with the decadent “snacks”. My son’s favorite is the super delicious “Crispy Crunchy Chocolate chip Cookies”, mini cookies that not only are filled with loads of tiny chocolate chips but has a exquisite fragrant coconut taste that is not to found elsewhere. Then there are the divine frozen treats such as the “Mini Mint Ice Cream Mouthfuls”, tiny size “Ice Cream cones”, and Ice Cream Mochi, all of which are flavorful, in addition to the sweetness.

My favorite is the selections of organic fruits and vegetables. They are reliable and consistently fresh. I especially enjoy the organic cherry tomatoes that are pop-in-your-mouth fresh and perfectly sweet. The last time I was there, there were the most beautiful figs, firm and luscious. The organic apples, bananas, pears are my staples there.

The organic Oatmeal here tastes better that the famous Quaker Oats. My son and I prefer the Trader Joe’s O’s cereal over the Cheerios brand. The O’s are puffier and not as brown and hard.

I use the Organic Chicken Drumstick to make “Soy Sauce Chicken” for my son which he kindly says is one of the best. The price is relatively non-expensive for $1.99 per lb.

The different selections of nuts are quite extensive here with various varieties in either salted, or non-salted. I also found an instant noodle that has no MSG nor any artificial ingredients that my son actually likes.

The fresh flowers and plants are always colorful and plentiful. The mini orchid is comparatively cheaper than most places and usually come in a pretty ceramic pot. One can also get different varieties of herbs in a pot.

My favorite sparkling water so far is the “Blu Italy Sparkling Natural Mineral Water” with a lemon and lime taste, so refreshing with ice.

See Trader Joe’s Website for various locations in your area.

Sandwich meats and beyond – Sprouts

Beef, Cold cut, Cooking, Food, Home, Meat, Roast beef, Sandwiches

“That was the juiciest, most delicious, succulent, bestest roast beef I have ever tasted!” With such eager enthusiasm that I have not seen in him for a long time in regards to food, my son exclaimed excitedly.

I think that I might had forced him to listen to me describing the food in my blog a bit too much. Was it actually that good? I tore a small piece and proceeded to taste it. He was right. There is a very wholesome, natural flavor to this meat. The seasoning is appropriate and not uncomfortably salty as other sandwich meats tend to be. The beef is moist, smooth, and a tad pink. Most importantly, the beef looks and tastes undeniably fresh, because it is. The deli meats are cut each day on premise, and wrapped with cellophane, and sold by weight. The best part for me is the fact there is no nitrates in the roast beef and the turkey that I buy – research has shown that sodium nitrates are linked to increased cancer risks.

This was the first time trying the roast beef. I have been purchasing the turkey breast there for over a year. Prior to discovering the turkey, I was buying the ones without preservatives at Trader Joe’s. The main difference is that the ones here at Sprouts are cut daily, in thicker slices, instead of the paper thin, overly processed unnatural looking ones at TJ.

Some days, when I am feeling lazy, I would just serve some of these deli meats with some brown rice and sliced cucumbers to my son for dinner. The reason I don’t just make a sandwich in the evening is because somehow the dinner meal seems more legit, more presentable, more like I did something when rice is served along side.

DSCN0567

There is also a low sodium version of the turkey breast, which is my preferred choice. In addition to turkey, roast beef, there are ham, roasted chicken, mesquite turkey, etc. Be sure to check the labels though, since there are quite a few varieties with preservatives.

DSCN0569

To go with the sandwich meats, I find that the Alpine Valley Organic breads are absolutely addictive. I tried the Multi grain, 12 grain w/Omega-3, Nine grain, they are all uncommonly moist, wonderfully chewy, with a bit of sweetness. Just as good, but slightly cheaper are the Sprouts sandwich breads,  with similar textures and taste. I almost never eat the crust on any sandwich breads, but obsessed with the fabulous chewiness of the multi-grain version, and the sunflowers seeds that are scattered all over the soft and malleable crust, I find myself just eating the entire plain slices of the bread continuously throughout the day.

DSCN0575

Another reason to shop at Sprouts, is the bulk bins. There are so many fun and tempting choices, such as the assorted types of nuts, seeds, grains, dried fruits, and best of all, different milk and dark chocolate covered fruits and nuts, and my favorite – chocolate covered espresso beans. The bitterness and the hard crunch of the coffee bean is a perfect balance for the sweet candy coating. The unique hotness of the wasabi coated edamame gives a surprising kick to your taste buds and provides a bizarre stimulation to the nasal passages.

fruits

DSCN0577

The Produce department always have unbeatable specials on seasonal fruits and vegetables, such as the pop-in-your-mouth, fruitiest tasting organic grape tomatoes, as well as the sweetest blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, all for $1.50/dry pint this week. Raw meat selections such as the organic chicken drum sticks, Old Tyme organic beef, and the natural pork chops are all excellent in quality.

Once in a Life Time Catch – 136 lbs Bluefin Tuna

08 Monday Jul 2013

FISHING A A 2013 037 (2)

Can you imagine catching a gigantic 136 lbs Bluefin Tuna? Hard to imagine, especially, I was told, that one does not see such big bluefins (over 100 lbs) in this part of the country. But that’s what some of our friends did this past week, coming back on July 4th with these rare huge bluefins. What do you do with such a big fish once it is caught? Eat it, naturally! But one cannot consume such a big fish by oneself, so one has a fish party.

First of all, it is already a feat to be able to go out to the deep sea to do this type of long-range big game sport fishing. I, for one, cannot even go across to Catalina Island on a ferry without getting really sea sick, so this type of fishing is not even possible for someone like me. Then one has to have plenty of time, money, to be in good physical condition, and to have the necessary stamina in order to endure the sometimes lengthy and harsh trips(ranges from 2 to 18 days), not to mention the difficulties of wrestling with these large fishes. Fortunately, I happen to know some of these people who have all of the above and who will share their extraordinary catches with the rest of us.

FISHING A A 2013 035

“An experience of a life time!”, exclaimed my friend, the fishing enthusiast, who just came back from the 4-day trip to Baja Mexico, about 250 miles south of San Diego. I was told that it took him well over an hour to battle the bluefin once it got hooked up, and that it took about 500 yards of line before the fish finally admitted defeat. With understandable excitement on his face, he recounted how he had to go around the boat 5 times just to chase the fish, all the while trying to hang on, and to keep hydrated by drinking water. I think his arm was still a bit numb and sore from the exceptionally long and challenging combat with the fish.

FISH DINNER @ GEORGE HOUSE 032(1)FISH DINNER @ GEORGE HOUSE 035As big as his tuna was, it was not the heaviest, the jackpot fish was 154 lbs. Being that it was so rare and unusual to see such big bluefins in this part of the country, these catches were indeed once in a life time event. The trip cost over $1700 for the 4 days. If the fish was to be auctioned off in Japan, it could fetch over $10,000 US, so we were indeed quite the fortunate bunch to be able to have a taste of this tuna. We were reminded that it would cost around $10 per piece if we were to have it in a restaurant, and it would not even be as fresh.

The yellowfin tunas, on the other hand, were the more common ones. In previous expeditions, some of the guys from this group had caught yellowfins weighing over 300 lbs! In addition to catching these large bluefins this time around, there were smaller ones that were caught weighing in around 18-66 lbs, as well as some good size yellowtails.

The host, a first generation Japanese, was waiting for everyone to arrive before proudly showing off his bluefin. With years of experiences behind him, he expertly put the knife to the middle of the fish and began cutting. Before long, platters of beautiful, shiny, tuna sashimi in various shades of red were laid out on the table. In addition to the bluefin sashimi and sushi, we were treated to yellowtail sashimi as well as cooked yellowtail collar(hamachi kama), of which is one of my very favorite.

How should I describe the taste and mouth feel of eating a piece of bluefin tuna? The taste is not strong at all in flavor, but incredibly and luxuriously rich and fresh tasting, with a texture that is silky smooth, and a melt-in-your mouth sensation. I usually do not use soy sauce in order that I could truly taste all of the fish without any contamination. A tiny dab of wasabi was all I needed. The dinner, the opportunity to taste such freshness, such delicacies, with these true and dedicated fishermen, was in itself, no doubt, an experience of a lifetime for all of us there.

Sunday Brunch – Relax and Enjoy

brunch

After an especially challenging month of events, it was such a welcomed and much needed respite to be at this breathtakingly beautiful resort with its calming seascape on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Even though this was not the first visit to the Catalina Kitchen at Terranea, it was the first time having brunch here. One does not need a reason to go up to this stunning oceanfront resort with its captivating panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The garden is large and immaculate, with walking trails and outdoor fireplaces – these fireplaces are especially dramatic and cozy on a cool California evening. This idyllic setting provides an wonderful escape from the mundane worries to the unavoidable intermittent difficulties of everyday life.

catalina kitchen

We were seated next to the window area overlooking the patio, with the sun shining softly through. The mood was relaxing. One look at the brunch selections, and I was ecstatic – there were so many assortment of cheeses to choose from. I love to taste and to try new cheeses, especially those from different countries. One can choose from various varieties of soft-ripened, semi-hard, and hard cheeses.

To go with the delectable cheeses, the next table over was filled with enticing and mouthwatering breads, croissants, pastries, danishes, rolls, muffins, bagels, donuts, the freshest raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, melons, as well as various cured meats, dried fruits, and pickled vegetables. Just the cheeses and pastries were reasons enough for me to come here.

The salad section, though small, were more than compensated by the excellence in freshness and selections, especially that of the asparagus and the crimson-red beets of which I had at least three or more servings.

All the different food stations here were relatively compact when compared to the other buffets in town. However, the food quality and taste were absolutely top of its class. The manager was constantly checking on the food, and telling the staff to keep replenishing, and to keep the food fresh and at right temperature. I was really impressed with the vigilance and care.

The smoked salmon, always one of my top choice, was great with the onions and capers on the halved croissant.. There were also fresh oysters, mussels, calamari salads, poke, shrimps, crab legs. The hot food station offered tender prime rib cut to order, selections of cheesy thin crusted pizzas, and the most buttery, creamiest mashed potatoes, with all the trimmings.

The next table over had breakfast selections such as fresh waffles, pancakes, very  moist and thick french toast, huge strips of bacon, pump and juicy sausages, steamed vegetables, some shrimp and pork dumplings, and soup of the day.

Sushi selections included tuna and salmon nigiri, and various maki-zushi such as tuna rolls, tempura shrimp rolls, California rolls,…There was a short line at the cook-to-order omelet and egg tables with its many add in options – that was probably the only section that I did not try.

The Dessert and Ice Cream Bar display was seductive and irresistible, and drew me in like a magnet. The numerous petite size cakes looked tantalizing and so inviting. The server, a very nice young lady, was more than eager to describe all the varieties to me. I told her I would tried one of everything. It was also fun to choose and add all the different toppings such as little marshmallows, chocolate covered pretzels, fresh fruits, different confectioneries, and whipped cream to my ice cream.

Did I mention that I had three delicious cappuccinos throughout the meal (included in the price, of course)and one of the freshest tasting orange juice to begin the meal with.

On the day of one’s birthday, the Catalina Kitchen offers a complimentary Surf N Turf dinner. I had the chance to try, and both the lobster and the filet mignon were exquisitely prepared and flawless in taste.

Koreatown Galleria Market- Fun Shopping

IMG_1886

It might seem extreme that sometimes I would end up going anywhere from three to five different markets in one day just to get everything I want for that day. Since I live within 5 miles from the major supermarkets, as well as smaller or specialty markets such as Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Market World,  it is not too difficult for me to visit a few of them in one trip.  Actually, I must confess that the real reason for visiting the different markets is that I truly enjoy looking at all the delectable food items, and I get excited trying new food products.

IMG_1883IMG_1882

Aside from usual markets that I go to almost daily, I would make it a point to visit the Koreatown Galleria Market whenever I am in that area for a meal. The freshness of the fruits and vegetables is one of the major reason why it is so appealing for me. The prices in the produce department seem very reasonable and even low at times, compared to some of the Chinese markets. The Persian and the pickling varieties of the cucumbers are always on sale and always firm and fresh. The Asian pears in boxes look huge and blemish free. The apples are good but the prices fluctuate quite a bit. I like the fact that the market feels really clean, airy and organized.

seaweedgimbap

Being that my son loves to add these seasoned dried seaweeds to his food, there are plenty of sizes and varieties to choose from here. There is a wide selection of banchan here that one can purchase in whatever amount desired since it is self served. The Gimbap here somehow taste better than some of the other ones I tried elsewhere.

galleria

Another propelling factor to go to the Galleria Market is that the Cake House, a Korean bakery, is located right across the market. The pastries and breads, though not as spectacular as some of other places that I frequent, are definitely not lacking in varieties, which makes it more fun to pick and choose from.

As a side note, there is an Eyewear shop on the second floor that I find to have the best and latest styles of frames and sunglasses for those who use them. Even though I don’t wear glasses, I find the vast selection of trendy styles to be inspiring to look at.

me and shoe

My name is Alice, so excited to be blogging after months and months of contemplating whether to start this or not. Friends have been constantly telling me for a long time to start writing and sharing my food (eating) experiences, since I so love to eat, and love to try new foods and restaurants.

Due to the fact that I am currently residing in the Los Angeles area, the majority of my writings on food-related subjects, restaurants, bakeries (my most favorite subject), and other eateries, will be in the vicinity of Los Angeles. Los Angeles is a good place to start my writing because the Chinese food here is one of the best (being Chinese, I have a bit of expertise). Of course, my all around favorite cuisine is Korean. I just love everything about Korean food, from all the varieties of kimchee, to the mixed purple rice, or brown rice with all sorts of beans inside, to of course, the main dishes such as braised black cod, cold noodles, tofu hotpot, steamed pork belly wraps, …Yum!

A bit about myself, born in Hong Kong, grew up in San Francisco, graduated from UCLA a while back, now residing in the Los Angeles area with my son who will reluctantly go out with me from time to time to enjoy some of his favorite foods such as ramen, shrimp rice noodle roll(cheong fun), pork belly with preserved mui choy, and of course Korean food such as bulgogi, galbi, tofu hot pot. I am so glad that he does take after me in regards to really enjoying Korean food.

As I have mentioned earlier, I am passionate about my pastries. After living in France for a year in a study program, I have developed an insatiable appetite and appreciation for not just French pastries, but all pastries, especially the many varieties of traditional and not-so-traditional Chinese pastries (both the Hong Kong and Taiwanese types), and the French-style pastries that are created and owned by Japanese or Koreans entrepreneurs.

I cannot wait to share my present as well as past food adventures and thoughts with someone other than my immediate circle of friends. I hope that in the process,I will learn and educate myself more on the topics of food and eating, as well as sharing ideas on other interesting and perhaps enlightening subject matter.
