“That was the juiciest, most delicious, succulent, bestest roast beef I have ever tasted!” With such eager enthusiasm that I have not seen in him for a long time in regards to food, my son exclaimed excitedly.

I think that I might had forced him to listen to me describing the food in my blog a bit too much. Was it actually that good? I tore a small piece and proceeded to taste it. He was right. There is a very wholesome, natural flavor to this meat. The seasoning is appropriate and not uncomfortably salty as other sandwich meats tend to be. The beef is moist, smooth, and a tad pink. Most importantly, the beef looks and tastes undeniably fresh, because it is. The deli meats are cut each day on premise, and wrapped with cellophane, and sold by weight. The best part for me is the fact there is no nitrates in the roast beef and the turkey that I buy – research has shown that sodium nitrates are linked to increased cancer risks.

This was the first time trying the roast beef. I have been purchasing the turkey breast there for over a year. Prior to discovering the turkey, I was buying the ones without preservatives at Trader Joe’s. The main difference is that the ones here at Sprouts are cut daily, in thicker slices, instead of the paper thin, overly processed unnatural looking ones at TJ.

Some days, when I am feeling lazy, I would just serve some of these deli meats with some brown rice and sliced cucumbers to my son for dinner. The reason I don’t just make a sandwich in the evening is because somehow the dinner meal seems more legit, more presentable, more like I did something when rice is served along side.

DSCN0567

There is also a low sodium version of the turkey breast, which is my preferred choice. In addition to turkey, roast beef, there are ham, roasted chicken, mesquite turkey, etc. Be sure to check the labels though, since there are quite a few varieties with preservatives.

DSCN0569

To go with the sandwich meats, I find that the Alpine Valley Organic breads are absolutely addictive. I tried the Multi grain, 12 grain w/Omega-3, Nine grain, they are all uncommonly moist, wonderfully chewy, with a bit of sweetness. Just as good, but slightly cheaper are the Sprouts sandwich breads,  with similar textures and taste. I almost never eat the crust on any sandwich breads, but obsessed with the fabulous chewiness of the multi-grain version, and the sunflowers seeds that are scattered all over the soft and malleable crust, I find myself just eating the entire plain slices of the bread continuously throughout the day.

DSCN0575

Another reason to shop at Sprouts, is the bulk bins. There are so many fun and tempting choices, such as the assorted types of nuts, seeds, grains, dried fruits, and best of all, different milk and dark chocolate covered fruits and nuts, and my favorite – chocolate covered espresso beans. The bitterness and the hard crunch of the coffee bean is a perfect balance for the sweet candy coating. The unique hotness of the wasabi coated edamame gives a surprising kick to your taste buds and provides a bizarre stimulation to the nasal passages.

The Produce department always have unbeatable specials on seasonal fruits and vegetables, such as the pop-in-your-mouth, fruitiest tasting organic grape tomatoes, as well as the sweetest blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, all for $1.50/dry pint this week. Raw meat selections such as the organic chicken drum sticks, Old Tyme organic beef, and the natural pork chops are all excellent in quality.

Seongbukdong – Great Galbijjim!

The phone rang. “Hello,…”. “…, do you want to try that place with the beef ribs and mackerel?” “You mean Seongbukdong?”

It was Wednesday morning, and I had just finished my morning cereal when my friend suggested trying this place known for the Galbijjim (steamed beef short ribs) and Braised Mackerel. Why not, life is short, and one should enjoy whenever possible.

Almost a mandatory stop whenever I go to Koreatown, I made my way over to the Koreatown Galleria Market to get some Gimbap, seaweed snacks, Persian cucumbers before heading over to the restaurant. Since Cake House was just right across the market, I got some ham and cheese croissants, corn muffin and some vegetable rolls for snacking later on.

The restaurant sat in a small strip mall, and I would have drove right past it if I had not seen a photo of the store front prior. Fortunately, there were quite a few parking spaces left in this tiny lot when I pulled up.

There were some empty tables when I walk in, and I wasted no time in ordering. “Steamed beef short ribs and braised mackerel, please”, I said to the waitress. She pointed to some photos from some newspaper clippings posted on the wall next to my table to confirm the order. “Yes”, I reassured her of my orders.

The Beef short ribs arrived – a little anxious that it might not meet my expectations. Incroyable! (Incredible, I mean) Not only was the beef unequivocally succulent, luscious, and remarkably tender, but one could even taste the essence of the meat itself because of its freshness and quality. Though the sweetness of the sauce is slightly more than I would have preferred, I still managed to devour most of the meat in the small pot, leaving my companion scrounging the left over bones for more meat.

mackerelWith its oiliness and strong “fishy” taste, the mackerel itself is already an extraordinary flavorful fish. The addition of the kimchee, peppers and radishes to the Brasied Mackerel enhanced that richness of the fish without overpowering it. At some restaurants, the texture of the cooked mackerel could be a bit tough at times, but the mackerel here still managed to retain some moistness. It would have been even more satisfying if there were more than just the three small pieces of mackerel in that pot.

I was not entirely full after the meal, perhaps that would leave me wanting to come back again sooner for more.

Diddy Riese – Cookies, Ice Cream Sandwiches, Brownies

Chocolate, Chocolate chip, Cookie, Diddy Riese, Home, Ice cream, Ice cream sandwich, Westwood

Who could resist a big, chunky, warm, enticing freshly baked cookie, let alone an ice cream sandwich made to order with two of these cookies?

cookieNot me. I was fortunate enough to be only about 15 minutes away from this infamous cookie place in Westwood last week. I had wanted to come back here since a few years ago when I happened to pass by the shop, and the line was way too long. I thought I would just come back soon another day. Time just flew by, it has been almost 3 years later now.

It was a bright, cheerful, sunny day around noon, probably cheerful because I was about to finally get my hands on these sweet, rich, teeth numbing goodies that I have been thinking about for so long. Thankfully, there was actually no line during that particular time of that day. I started to take some photos of the place, and checked out the menu.

Only 35 cents for one cookie, 3 cookies for $1, or 6 for $2.00, The prices were so incredibly reasonable! There were ten delectable, mouth-watering flavors to choose from: chocolate chip w/walnuts, white chocolate w/macadamia, peanut butter, double chocolate chip, white chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin nut, chocolate w/white chocolate, sugar cinnamon, candy, chocolate chip. Yum!

How could one choose just a few from this cruel, tempting list? So I bought one of each except for the candy one for a total of $3.00. I felt so unusually elated for some reason. The brownies looked so moist and chocolaty sitting next to the cookies that I could not come up with a good reason not to get one for only 75 cents.

brownieOne can order a custom made ice cream sandwich with any 2 of the insanely fresh cookies and a choice of one of the dozen of Dreyer’s Ice Cream flavors such as: peanut butter cup, vanilla bean, mint chocolate chip, rocky road, strawberry cheese cake chunk, butter pecan, espresso chip, … for $1.75.

So odd but true how a short and simple excursion such as this could be so unbelievably fun and fulfilling to my taste buds, my spirit and my stomach.

Butter, Crudo, Home, Pacific Ocean, Palo Verde, Peaches, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rancho Palos Verdes California

5 Stars – that is how good the experience was at Mar’sel.

The View – Spectacular, calming, tranquil.

DSCN0535

Nestled in the Palos Verdes Peninsula, inside the La Terranea resort, Mar’sel offered an unobstructed, breathtaking view of the Pacific ocean in a serene setting that made one forgets all of life’s worries for that brief amount of time.

Definitely reserve a table at the outside patio area, it will make you feel like you are one with nature, while enjoying the unparalleled service and atmosphere.

Bread – the best.

.DSCN0543

I felt so absolutely at peace while I was looking out at the magnificent scenery and enjoying my “English Muffins”. These were the best “muffins” I have ever had. Warm, pleasurably soft, with tiny bit of crunch on top and bottom of the crust, it was more like a muffin bread hybrid, so incredible that I ate both of them right away with the unsalted butter served on the side. Fortunately for my eating companion, we were able to get more.

The Service – Wonderful, professional.

The service staff was one of the best group I have encountered so far. The waiter was courteous, and helpful without being overly eager to please or intruding. The bus boy was so kind looking and sweet, and efficient. I find that niceness, kindness do go a long way in really making someone feel special.

The Food – Enjoyable, satisfying.

It was the DineLa that brought us here. We were to choose six plates, including dessert, out of the twelve that were offered. Between the two of us, we had nine different selections (there were 3 duplications). I was relieved that the portion size of each plate was not tiny, as I had not eaten much the whole day to prepare for this dinner. I will mention some of my favorites for the evening.

DSCN0549

Grilled Sugarlip Peaches – So unexpectedly delicious with the sweetness of the peaches, and the slight saltiness of the duck salami and manchego cheese. The texture was a good combination of the softness of the cooked peaches and the chewiness of the salami.

DSCN0545

Homemade Italian Sausage – the sausage was exquisitely tender, moist, and full-flavored, served inside a toasted brioche with savory peppers and onions.

Grilled Spanish Octopus – Not usually a fan of octopus, but I was surprisingly amazed at how well cooked and soft the octopus was.

DSCN0548

Mushroom and Barley Risotto – The consistencies of the rice with mushroom was ultra rich, creamy, fabulous and smooth, but just a tad too salty. The egg, though, was perfect. The yolk was luscious and still raw, but not runny, went so superbly with the “muffin”.

DSCN0546

Crudo with Hawaiian Hamachi – the 2 slices of hamachi were and fresh and mild, and the dab of yogurt and the slice of plum enhanced the overall delicate flavor of the fish.

DSCN0555

Caramel Pudding – The pudding was served in a small canning jar with lid, with a thin sugar cookie on the side. The layer of the thick luxurious caramel topped with the marvelously dense layer of pudding was sublime. The balance of the flavors was expertly executed with a mix of saltiness from the topping with the velvety semi-sweetness of the pudding.

Garden Café – East and West

FISH DINNER @ GEORGE HOUSE 005

No matter how many times or how often I come here, no matter what I order, I have never been disappointed. Garden Café is probably one of the very few restaurants that are consistently dependable in both the taste and the quality of food.

Though the outside of the restaurant, especially the front entrance area, looks a bit scruffy and not the most inviting, the inside is bright, cheerful and usually bustling with customers. Lunch time can be quite packed.

FISH DINNER @ GEORGE HOUSE 006

The best deal in town has got to be the Roasted Angus Beef with BBQ Sauce Baguette, which comes with a hefty amount of mouth-watering, juicy prime rib on french bread, and includes french fries, all for less than 7 dollars!

Another favorite here is the Seafood Linguine with Tomato Basil Sauce. A generous portion of noodles with a wonderful mix of scallops, fish, shrimp, mussels, squid, in a delectable tangy, savory sauce. The Braised Ox Tongue with Tomato Sauce is divine, with at least four to five pieces of the moist, luscious meat served with your choice of either rice or pasta. The excellence of this dish is hard too find elsewhere.

This type of Hong Kong style café is great because one can order the traditional Chinese dishes such as Chow Fun, Rice Porridge, Stir Fry dishes, as well as the western style offerings such as Grilled Pork Chop, Grilled Steak and Salmon, Oxtail, Ox Tongue with Wine Sauce, not to mention the varieties of Curries, Japanese Ramen, and many others. The menu is extensive with hundreds of choices.

The Red Bean Ice here is large, tasty and thick, and only $1.50 when ordering with Lunch Specials. What is a Hong Kong style café without a good HK style milk tea, a concoction made with black tea and either evaporated or condensed milk. The one here is smooth and strong, and half a cup would be enough to keep me up all night.

And if one is ever up late (or early) and hungry, the restaurant is opened from 7am to 4am, with breakfast specials.

Jun Won – Bold Flavors

Destination: Eun Daegu Jorim (Braised Black Cod). Rumor has it that Jun Won offers one of the best of this beloved dish of mine, surely I cannot bypass this temptation to try.

If I had not done my research and looked up a photo of the restaurant, it would have be easy to miss the place, since the sign is only in Korean. Rarely had I encountered so much available parking spaces for a Korean restaurant in that area, I was thankfully relieved not to have to deal with valet.

The place is small, intimate and felt very welcoming and homey. The waiting staff were exceptionally jovial. Famished from having played for over 2 1/2 hours of badminton, I hurriedly ordered the two dishes I came here for: Spicy Pork with Kimchee, Brasied Black Cod.

spicy pork

After a few bites of the pork with kimchee, I realized that I  have just found my all time 2nd favorite Korean dish after the Braised Black Cod. The flavors of this pork dish were outrageously deep, robust, pungent. The Kimchee was nothing less than remarkable – reminiscent somehow of a full bodied, well-aged wine. One could almost taste the amount of time that the fermentation took to achieve such an unparalleled depth of richness in flavor.

Almost every table had ordered the braised cod. I would say that the dish had met my expectation. Actually, the black cod itself is such a succulent, luscious fish that it would be difficult to mess it up. The velvety, buttery texture of the fish, went well with the mildly piquant, savory sauce – wish there were more than just the three pieces on the plate.

While the presentation of both of the dishes looked similar, piles of nondescript goodness under an abundance of green onions and covered with a dark orangey, brownish sauce, the tastes were distinct from each other.

A small bowl of cold seaweed soup was suddenly presented in front of me. While I had plenty of warm seaweed soup before, this was the first time having a cold one. The faintly vinegary coolness of the broth along with heaps of soft silky seaweed was incredibly refreshing after the aggressive, bold flavors – it was like that of a sea breeze on a humid, muggy afternoon.

Beyond stuffed, after finishing off the outstanding assortment of banchan, and everything else from the plates, with two bowls of rice,  I was ready for my next conquest.

Pho So 1 – Simple and Fast

Cooking, Noodle, Pho, Soup, Spring roll, Sriracha, Tendon

l

With so many diverse types and varieties of soup noodles to choose from, whether it be from the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, I would sometimes go for months without having a bowl of Pho. Not that I don’t enjoy it as much as the other type of noodles, in fact, I find the rice noodles used in the Pho to be among my favorite type of noodle due to its smooth consistency and delicate quality.

The Special Combo with rare slices of steak, well-done brisket, flank, tendon and tripe  is a popular choice here at Pho So 1, since it offers such an assortment of meats in one bowl, and is huge. However, I tend to request for a special order of just Pho with tendon. I adore beef tendon, because of its gelatinous quality and spongy mouth feel. Here, the tendons are cut into rectangular chunks, and there is usually a generous amount.

Immediately when the hot Pho arrives, I would put the raw bean sprouts in the soup while it is still hot, so that the sprouts get cooked a bit. Sometimes, I would request the bean sprouts be boiled briefly first before bringing it to the table. After the sprouts are in, I would put in 2 to 3 slices of the jalapeño pepper, a few squeezes of the lime, a dab of Sriracha hot sauce, and I would be all set.

pho-so-1

Occasionally, I would order the Spring Rolls which comes three to an order. The rice paper skin is soft and pleasurably chewy at the same time. The shrimp, the meat, the rice vermicelli, and the herb inside the roll are all notably fresh, When dipped with the rich, thick, savory and slightly sweet peanut sauce, the roll provides a delectable and exceptionally appetizing side dish to my delightful and soul comforting bowl of soup noodle.

Doughnut, donut holes

DSCN0529

It was the oddest thing – just as I entered my car with the excitement of having just purchased 2 bags of donuts and donut holes from Stan’s Donut, I started my engine, the radio came on right away with some doctor being interviewed on NPR saying, “sugar is a toxin, and should be regulated, it the the major cause of diabetes, obesity, cancer …”, I was listening to that while I was still holding these bags in my other hand. I did not know whether it was a message telling me to immediately toss the poison out of the car, or to just give them away to anyone who were willing to take them. I did neither. In fact, I took one of the small white powdered donut hole and ate half of it.DSCN0530

After wanting to try the donuts here at Stan’s for quite some time, I made the trip to Westwood on this busy Tuesday around noon time. I had forgotten how difficult it was to drive and park in this area. After all, I had not been back to this area of town in years since my college days. The streets were crowded with more places offering outside seating than I remembered. I was fortunate enough to land a parking space close to the store.

The donut shop was inside the same shop as the Flame Broiler, so there was quite a bit of smoke fumes while I was standing and looking at all the donuts. I was wondering whether that might affect the taste of the donuts. The donut counter was small but packed with so many different varieties. After scrutinizing all the selections, I decided on the Plain Glazed, Cinnamon, Chocolate Sprinkles, Coconut, and various other ones, and some donut holes. My son pointed out  that the name “donut hole” is inappropriate since a hole is an opening, so there cannot be a hole and, at the same time, a donut.

The Plain glazed was the first to be tried upon arriving home. I was delighted to find the texture to be marvelously moist and soft, with a slight chewiness, and the sweetness of the glaze to be at just the perfect level. I tend to find that the glazed donut is usually the best tasting one amongst the so many different varieties offered in most donut shops. This was true for Stan’s as well. After tasting a bit of each of the others, I found most of them to be just sweet, without too much distinction from each other. Perhaps I was just tasting too photo (2)many at the same time.

As with so many things in life, the end product is not always the most important, it is the journey. I had one of the most absorbing and memory evoking drive through Santa Monica and Westwood. Along with the delightful little treats, the much needed short and sweet excursion was enormously satisfying and fulfilling, and most important of all, it was FUN!

Once in a Life Time Catch – 136 lbs Bluefin Tuna

08 Monday Jul 2013

FISHING A A 2013 037 (2)

Can you imagine catching a gigantic 136 lbs Bluefin Tuna? Hard to imagine, especially, I was told, that one does not see such big bluefins (over 100 lbs) in this part of the country. But that’s what some of our friends did this past week, coming back on July 4th with these rare huge bluefins. What do you do with such a big fish once it is caught? Eat it, naturally! But one cannot consume such a big fish by oneself, so one has a fish party.

First of all, it is already a feat to be able to go out to the deep sea to do this type of long-range big game sport fishing. I, for one, cannot even go across to Catalina Island on a ferry without getting really sea sick, so this type of fishing is not even possible for someone like me. Then one has to have plenty of time, money, to be in good physical condition, and to have the necessary stamina in order to endure the sometimes lengthy and harsh trips(ranges from 2 to 18 days), not to mention the difficulties of wrestling with these large fishes. Fortunately, I happen to know some of these people who have all of the above and who will share their extraordinary catches with the rest of us.

FISHING A A 2013 035

“An experience of a life time!”, exclaimed my friend, the fishing enthusiast, who just came back from the 4-day trip to Baja Mexico, about 250 miles south of San Diego. I was told that it took him well over an hour to battle the bluefin once it got hooked up, and that it took about 500 yards of line before the fish finally admitted defeat. With understandable excitement on his face, he recounted how he had to go around the boat 5 times just to chase the fish, all the while trying to hang on, and to keep hydrated by drinking water. I think his arm was still a bit numb and sore from the exceptionally long and challenging combat with the fish.

FISH DINNER @ GEORGE HOUSE 032(1)FISH DINNER @ GEORGE HOUSE 035As big as his tuna was, it was not the heaviest, the jackpot fish was 154 lbs. Being that it was so rare and unusual to see such big bluefins in this part of the country, these catches were indeed once in a life time event. The trip cost over $1700 for the 4 days. If the fish was to be auctioned off in Japan, it could fetch over $10,000 US, so we were indeed quite the fortunate bunch to be able to have a taste of this tuna. We were reminded that it would cost around $10 per piece if we were to have it in a restaurant, and it would not even be as fresh.

The yellowfin tunas, on the other hand, were the more common ones. In previous expeditions, some of the guys from this group had caught yellowfins weighing over 300 lbs! In addition to catching these large bluefins this time around, there were smaller ones that were caught weighing in around 18-66 lbs, as well as some good size yellowtails.

The host, a first generation Japanese, was waiting for everyone to arrive before proudly showing off his bluefin. With years of experiences behind him, he expertly put the knife to the middle of the fish and began cutting. Before long, platters of beautiful, shiny, tuna sashimi in various shades of red were laid out on the table. In addition to the bluefin sashimi and sushi, we were treated to yellowtail sashimi as well as cooked yellowtail collar(hamachi kama), of which is one of my very favorite.

How should I describe the taste and mouth feel of eating a piece of bluefin tuna? The taste is not strong at all in flavor, but incredibly and luxuriously rich and fresh tasting, with a texture that is silky smooth, and a melt-in-your mouth sensation. I usually do not use soy sauce in order that I could truly taste all of the fish without any contamination. A tiny dab of wasabi was all I needed. The dinner, the opportunity to taste such freshness, such delicacies, with these true and dedicated fishermen, was in itself, no doubt, an experience of a lifetime for all of us there.

Santouka Ramen – Is it that good?

05 Friday Jul 2013

Los Angeles, Mifune, Mitsuwa Marketplace, Pork, Ramen, Santouka, Torrance, Torrance California

One day, a friend and I were talking about ramen, and I was advised that this ramen shop inside the Mitsuwa Marketplace food court is rated number one by who knows what. I was skeptical, a ramen at some food court is at the top amongst all the ramen in Los IMG_1874Angeles?

Not a stranger at all to this food court in Torrance, I have been going there regularly for many years for the udon at Mifune. Having never paid much attention to the ramen there, I decided to grab a friend to try out this infamous noodle shop. I was surprised to see a line in front of this tiny store front. As I waited, I noticed to my right side, were the realistic looking plastic displays of all the different ramen sets one could choose from, along with the prices.

One could choose from salt ramen, soy sauce ramen, miso or spicy miso ramen. There were three sizes: small, medium or large. The different combo sets included one of the following over a small bowl of rice: ikura (salmon roe), or natto (fermented soy bean), or chopped green onions, or pork and chopped green onions. Two halves of a marinated boiled egg also came with the set.

I decided on the Combo set of salt ramen with the Ikura don, medium size. There were plenty of ikura on top of the rice. The saltiness of the salmon roe mixed well with the ever so slight sweetness of the Japanese rice. The different toppings on the ramen looked aesthetically pleasing and well thought out. There were the two slices of fatty pork, some bamboo shoots, bits of cloud ear, a piece of fish cake, some chopped green onions, and a umeboshi (pickled plum).

The pork had a good ratio of fat to meat, about half and half, was tender and well flavored. All the other ingredients tasted in harmony with each other. I especially liked the crunchiness and the unique taste of the bamboo shoots. The umeboshi was a nice touch to help balance out the saltiness of the broth. While not a connoisseur of ramen, I would say the Santouka offers a tasty, solid ramen that is well crafted and of top quality.  I would, however, prefer the broth to be much less salty, so that one can consume more of it without worrying about the high salt content.
